THE LORD CALLS US INTO HIS PRESENCE
Call to Worship

The people shall stand.

Psalm 69:34-36

34 Let heaven and earth praise Him, The seas and everything that moves in them. 35 For God will save Zion And build the cities of Judah, That they may dwell there and possess it. 36 Also, the descendants of His servants shall inherit it, And those who love His name shall dwell in it.

O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing – Cantus 315

MINISTER: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
PEOPLE: Amen!

The Light shines in the darkness
And the darkness has not overcome it.

God has shone in our hearts
To give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

In Him was life,
And the life was the light of men.

COLLECT FOR PURITY

MINSTER: Almighty God,

PEOPLE: Unto whom all hearts are open, All desires known, And from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of Your Holy Spirit, That we may perfectly love You And worthily magnify Your Glorious Name, Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE LORD CLEANSES US FROM OUR SIN
Confession of Sin

The people shall kneel.

MINSTER: Most merciful God,

PEOPLE: We have erred and strayed from Your ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against Your holy laws. We have left undone what ought to be done, And we have done what ought not to be done. And there is no health in us. But You, O Lord, have mercy on us, miserable sinners. Spare those, O God, who confess their faults.

Restore those who are penitent, According to Your promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord. And grant, most merciful Father, for His sake, That we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, To the glory of Your holy Name. Amen.

[Silent prayer, followed by Amen]

Absolution

The people shall stand.

MINISTER: Lift up your hearts!
PEOPLE: We lift them up unto the Lord!

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God!
It is proper and right so to do!

Gloria Patri – Cantus 436

(The people shall raise their hand of the Gloria Patri)

THE LORD CONSECRATES US BY HIS WORD
Collect for Peace

MINSTER: Father in Heaven

PEOPLE: King of all Nations,
You led the wise men to worship Jesus;
You have installed Your Son on Zion Your holy hill,
And we confess that He is King of all kings and Lord of all lords;
You have made the kingdoms of this world to be the kingdoms of our Lord and of Your Christ:
Rule the earth, we pray, so that peace and righteousness May be established among all nations’
Guide us in the way of peace, that we might be called the sons of God. For the sake of Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord.
Amen.

The people shall sit.

NEW TESTAMENT – 1 Corinthians 13:1-13

1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. 2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.

4 Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; 5 does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; 6 does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

8 Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part. 10 But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away. 11 When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things. 12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known. 13 And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

MINISTER: The Word of the Lord!
PEOPLE: Thanks be to God!

PSALM – Psalm 71

PEOPLE: Amen!

GOSPEL – Luke 4:21-30

21 And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” 22 So all bore witness to Him, and marveled at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth. And they said, “Is this not Joseph’s son?” 23 He said to them, “You will surely say this proverb to Me, ‘Physician, heal yourself! Whatever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in Your country.’ ” 24 Then He said, “Assuredly, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own country. 25 But I tell you truly, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and there was a great famine throughout all the land; 26 but to none of them was Elijah sent except to Zarephath, in the region of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. 27 And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian.” 28 So all those in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, 29 and rose up and thrust Him out of the city; and they led Him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, that they might throw Him down over the cliff. 30 Then passing through the midst of them, He went His way.

The victory of our Lord Jesus Christ!
Praise be to you, O Christ!

The people shall stand.

Confession of Faith - Apostles Creed

I believe in God,
the Father almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried;
he descended into Hades;
on the third day he rose again from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty;
from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting.

Amen.
