Call to Worship

The people shall stand.

Psalm 148:1-4

Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord from the heavens; Praise Him in the heights! Praise Him, all His angels; Praise Him, all His hosts! Praise Him, sun and moon; Praise Him, all you stars of light! Praise Him, you heavens of heavens, And you waters above the heavens!

Angels We Have Heard on High – Cantus 230

MINISTER: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
PEOPLE: Amen!

For to us a child is born
To us a son is given;

And the government shall be upon his shoulder,
And his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end,
On the throne of David and over his kingdom,

To establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore.
The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.

COLLECT FOR PURITY

MINSTER: Almighty God,

PEOPLE: Unto whom all hearts are open, All desires known, And from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of Your Holy Spirit, That we may perfectly love You And worthily magnify Your Glorious Name, Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE LORD CLEANSES US FROM OUR SIN
Confession of Sin

The people shall kneel.

MINSTER: Most merciful God,

PEOPLE: We have erred and strayed from Your ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against Your holy laws. We have left undone what ought to be done, And we have done what ought not to be done. And there is no health in us. But You, O Lord, have mercy on us, miserable sinners. Spare those, O God, who confess their faults.

Restore those who are penitent, According to Your promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord. And grant, most merciful Father, for His sake, That we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, To the glory of Your holy Name. Amen.

[Silent prayer, followed by Amen]

Absolution

The people shall stand.

MINISTER: Lift up your hearts!
PEOPLE: We lift them up unto the Lord!

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God!
It is proper and right so to do!

Gloria Patri – Cantus 436

THE LORD CONSECRATES US BY HIS WORD
Collect for Peace

MINSTER: Blessed Father

PEOPLE: You have poured upon us the new light of your incarnate Word: Grant that this light, enkindled in our hearts, may shine forth in our lives; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The people shall sit.

NEW TESTAMENT – Colossians 3:12-17

12 Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. 14 But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. 15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. 17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

MINISTER: The Word of the Lord!
PEOPLE: Thanks be to God!

PSALM – Psalm 148

Praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord from the heavens;
Praise Him in the heights!
Praise Him, all His angels;
Praise Him, all His hosts!
Praise Him, sun and moon;
Praise Him, all you stars of light!
Praise Him, you heavens of heavens,
And you waters above the heavens!
Let them praise the name of the Lord,
For He commanded and they were created.
He also established them forever and ever;
He made a decree which shall not pass away.

Praise the Lord from the earth,
You great sea creatures and all the depths;
Fire and hail, snow and clouds;
Stormy wind, fulfilling His word;
Mountains and all hills;
Fruitful trees and all cedars;
Beasts and all cattle;
Creeping things and flying fowl;
Kings of the earth and all peoples;
Princes and all judges of the earth;
Both young men and maidens;
Old men and children.

Let them praise the name of the Lord,
For His name alone is exalted;
His glory is above the earth and heaven.
And He has exalted the horn of His people,
The praise of all His saints—
Of the children of Israel,
A people near to Him.
Praise the Lord!

PEOPLE: Amen!

GOSPEL – Luke 2:41-52

41 His parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover. 42 And when He was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to the custom of the feast. 43 When they had finished the days, as they returned, the Boy Jesus lingered behind in Jerusalem. And [a]Joseph and His mother did not know it; 44 but supposing Him to have been in the company, they went a day’s journey, and sought Him among their relatives and acquaintances. 45 So when they did not find Him, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking Him. 46 Now so it was that after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions. 47 And all who heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers. 48 So when they saw Him, they were amazed; and His mother said to Him, “Son, why have You done this to us? Look, Your father and I have sought You anxiously.”

49 And He said to them, “Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?” 50 But they did not understand the statement which He spoke to them. 51 Then He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was [b]subject to them, but His mother kept all these things in her heart. 52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.

The victory of our Lord Jesus Christ!
Praise be to you, O Christ!

The people shall stand.

Confession of Faith - Apostles Creed

I believe in God,
the Father almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried;
he descended into Hades;
on the third day he rose again from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty;
from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting.

Amen.
